The OtherU Core codebase is licensed under the Business Source License 1.1 (BSL 1.1), with an automatic conversion to Apache License 2.0 on 2029-02-03.
What This Means
Before 2029-02-03 (Change Date):
- You may use, copy, modify, and create derivative works of the source for any non-production use — research, evaluation, education, internal development, and contribution back to the project.
- Production use (running OtherU Core to provide a paid service, or as part of a commercial product) requires a written commercial license from Other U Inc.
- Permitted use, modification, and redistribution are subject to the full text of the BSL 1.1 license file shipped with the source.
On and after 2029-02-03 (Change Date):
- The license automatically converts to Apache License 2.0. No action is required by Other U Inc. or any user; the conversion is encoded in the BSL 1.1 license terms shipped with the source.
- All terms of Apache 2.0 then apply — including unrestricted commercial use, patent grant, and the standard "as is" warranty disclaimer.
What You Can Do Today, Without a Commercial License
- Read, fork, and study the source code.
- Run OtherU Core for personal, research, or evaluation purposes.
- Modify and redistribute the source under the BSL 1.1 terms.
- Contribute patches and pull requests back to the project.
What Requires a Commercial License Today
- Operating OtherU Core as a paid service or hosted offering.
- Distributing OtherU Core as a commercial product (including bundling it inside another commercial product).
- Any use that the BSL 1.1 text identifies as a non-permitted production use.
If you are unsure whether your intended use falls inside or outside the non-production permitted-use scope, treat it as requiring a commercial license and contact us.
Trademarks and Marks
The "OtherU" wordmark, the company name "Other U Inc.", and associated logos are trademarks of Other U Inc. The BSL 1.1 source license does not grant a trademark license. Trademark use requires a separate written license.
Third-Party Components
OtherU Core depends on open-source libraries, models, and runtime components under their own licenses. Material third-party components are identified in the source repository (THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md or equivalent). Compliance with those licenses is the responsibility of the user.
